House Bergenhuizen
Transformation barn into contemporary house
Residence Bergenhuizen is located in the outskirts of Noorbeek, a small village in the Limburg ‘heuvelland’. The former barn of a court farm has been converted into a house. The recognizable basic shape of the barn was used as the basis for the conversion. In addition to the shape; symmetry, repetition and simplicity also determine the character of the new house. The basic form of the house is made of brick masonry. A dark gray zinc seamed roof embraces the masonry by continuing over the side walls.
The internal space is divided by a central wooden ‘block’. The block separates the workspace from the cooking and living areas. A large glass front opens up the center of the house and connects the living space to the garden.
By only using a central, free-standing block as a space-divider, eliminating the need for additional walls, the openness of the barn-typology is guaranteed. By retaining the character of the barn and giving it a new interpretation, a fitting architecture is created, providing a fusion between old and new.
